Transmedia Yakuza

Watching the Yakuza Papers right now for the first time in to be reminded of just how awesome this sprawling series is. It's like a pulpy cross between a Yakuza-heavy "Kill Bill" crossed with "The Wire" before either existed. Can't help but wonder about the possibilities of transmedia in this universe. There is so much detail, character, and history interwoven into this series it practically spills (bloodily) off the screen, begging to be transferred to other mediums. Someone look into this! A comic book/manga series, a video game, something...too many cool characters and narrative threads left to explore in this series which premiered in 1973.

I wonder what it is about crime dramas and stories in general that are so compelling to me. Off the top of my head, I think the outsized characters, threat of violence, and highly dramatic settings are like a heightened reality for the very human feelings all of us go through on a daily basis- joy, fear, rage, lust, love, trust, and confusion. I think I also really love the various codes of honor and how they both make and break these secret societies which thrive on establishing power on one's own terms.

Anyway, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend you treat yourself. Peep the trailer here.

On a related note...Sasquatch Punches has got some big plans for our own crime-oriented story property in the works. We are very excited :)
